His long suffering widow Dona Flor devotes herself to her cooking school and her friends, who urge her to remarry. She is soon drawn to a kind pharmacist who is everything Vadinho was not, and is altogether happy to marry him. But after her wedding she finds herself dreaming about her first husband's amorous attentions; and one evening Vadinho himself appears by her bed, as lusty as ever, to claim his marital rights... v angličtine, brožovaná, menší formát, 555 strán

The Q Document
Spisovatel: Roberts Hall James, Corgi books 1964
Katalogové číslo: L6745
In Tokyo, Cooper, spiritually & emotionally gutted, has sold his mind to Victor Hawkins who has a "most unusual traffic" in documents & human beings (little girls). Cooper's work is to appraise & verify papers & letters, among them now the Q document, once in the hands of a former Jewish scholar who became a Nazi. The document, a contemporary source for the four Gospels, has a potential for heresy which could destroy Christianity, & once certified, Victor plans to sell it to the Red Chinese. Cooper, partly thru a Father O'Connor who tries to make him see the spiritual light, partly thru Myoko, an 11-year-old child he rescues & hides from Victor, & partly thru Willa, his mistress, is moved to act...v angličtine, brožovaná, 253 strán, menší formát

The Galileans
Spisovatel: Slaughter Frank G., A Panther Book 1960
Katalogové číslo: G5587
Frank Slaughter crafted this rather touching novelization of the life of Mary Magdalene in 1953. In his interpretation, the famous Biblical character is an independent female with powerful charms as a dancer and a beautiful mane of fiery red hair (depicted on the original dustjacket -- this idea of red hair for Mary Magdalene was also very popular with Italian Renaissance artists). He does not subscribe to the notion that Mary Magdalene was also the Mary of Bethany mentioned in the Bible (Scripture doesn't say they were the same person), and he does not paint her as a wily prostitute. Instead, his Mary Magdalene is a smart female who falls in love with the young, accomplished physician Joseph, nephew of the famed Joseph of Arimathea (who is mentioned in Scripture as the one who asked for Jesus' crucified body). While Joseph patiently waits for an opportunity to commit to her, Mary is caught up in circumstances beyond her control, drawn into Pontius Pilate's court and abused there. The idea of females -- particularly beautiful ones -- being seen only as sexual objects, and the resulting feelings of shame and lowliness, are huge themes here. And this male author takes quite a bit of care in illustrating them. When Jesus comes along in this story, he's only secondary, even though he's critical to Mary's "salvation." His words are taken directly from the Revised Standard Version of the New Testament. Slaughter dives into the politics of the time, the relations of Jews and Greeks and Romans, to set the proper scene for the Galileans he focuses on. But the things Mary falls victim to have nothing to do with politics or the dreadful way females were viewed in those times; these are universal themes that are alive and thriving today.... malý formát,v angličtine,brožovaná,285 strán

Don´t Cry For Me Aberystwyth
Spisovatel: Pryce Malcolm, Bloomsbury 2007
Katalogové číslo: H495
The fourth book in the Louie Knight Mystery series. It's Christmas in Aberystwyth. The tourists have gone home. The latest movie starring Clip the Sheepdog is on at the cinema. And a man wearing a red and white robe is found brutally murdered in a Chinatown alley. A single word is scrawled in his blood on the pavement: Hoffmann. But who is Hoffmann? Thus begins the latest hilarious adventure in the "Louie Knight" series. This time, Aberystwyth's celebrated crimefighter finds himself all at sea in a brilliant pastiche of a cold war spy thriller. Caught in a web of intrigue spanning the world from Patagonia to Aberystwyth, Louie sets out on the trail of a legendary document stolen long ago from Adolf Eichmann. It is said to contain an astonishing revelation about the ultimate fate of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, but he's not the only one who wants it. A bewildering array of superannuated spooks and silver-haired spies have descended on Aberystwyth, all lured out of retirement by one tantalising rumour: Hoffmann has decided to come in from the Cold. Louie Knight, who still hasn't wrapped his presents, just wishes he could have waited until after the holiday... v angličtine, tvrdá väzba, väčší formát, obal, 280 strán
