The Autobiography of Peter Kay. Peter Kay's unerring gift for observing the absurdities and eccentricities of family life has earned himself a widespread, everyman appeal. These vivid observations coupled with a kind of nostalgia that never fails to grab his audience's shared understanding, have earned him comparisons with Alan Bennett and Ronnie Barker. In his award winning TV series' he creates worlds populated by degenerate, bitter, useless, endearing and always recognisable characters which have attracted a huge and loyal following. In many ways he's an old fashioned kind of comedian and the scope and enormity of his fanbase reflects this. He doesn't tell jokes about politics or sex, but rather rejoices in the far funnier areas of life: elderly relatives and answering machines, dads dancing badly at weddings, garlic bread and cheesecake, your mum's HRT...His autobiography is full of this kind of humour and nostalgia, beginning with Kay's first ever driving lesson, taking him back through his Bolton childhood, the numerous jobs he held after school and leading up until the time he passed his driving test and found fame.... obal, tvrdá väzba, veľký formát, v angličtine, 270 strán

The Galileans

Spisovatel: Slaughter Frank G., A Panther Book 1960
Katalogové číslo: G5587

Slaughter Frank G. - The Galileans Frank Slaughter crafted this rather touching novelization of the life of Mary Magdalene in 1953. In his interpretation, the famous Biblical character is an independent female with powerful charms as a dancer and a beautiful mane of fiery red hair (depicted on the original dustjacket -- this idea of red hair for Mary Magdalene was also very popular with Italian Renaissance artists). He does not subscribe to the notion that Mary Magdalene was also the Mary of Bethany mentioned in the Bible (Scripture doesn't say they were the same person), and he does not paint her as a wily prostitute. Instead, his Mary Magdalene is a smart female who falls in love with the young, accomplished physician Joseph, nephew of the famed Joseph of Arimathea (who is mentioned in Scripture as the one who asked for Jesus' crucified body). While Joseph patiently waits for an opportunity to commit to her, Mary is caught up in circumstances beyond her control, drawn into Pontius Pilate's court and abused there. The idea of females -- particularly beautiful ones -- being seen only as sexual objects, and the resulting feelings of shame and lowliness, are huge themes here. And this male author takes quite a bit of care in illustrating them. When Jesus comes along in this story, he's only secondary, even though he's critical to Mary's "salvation." His words are taken directly from the Revised Standard Version of the New Testament. Slaughter dives into the politics of the time, the relations of Jews and Greeks and Romans, to set the proper scene for the Galileans he focuses on. But the things Mary falls victim to have nothing to do with politics or the dreadful way females were viewed in those times; these are universal themes that are alive and thriving today.... malý formát,v angličtine,brožovaná,285 strán

Rumours of War

Spisovatel: Mallinson Allan, Bantam Books 2007
Katalogové číslo: E7412

Mallinson Allan - Rumours of War 1826: Napoleon Bonaparte is dead, the Congress of Vienna's work is done, and there is peace in Europe. However, in Portugal there is the scent of civil war in the air following the death of King John VI. Newly returned from India, Matthew Hervey joins a party of officers sent to make an assessment and lend support to the Portuguese queen. His place on the expedition is secured with the help and influence of his new friend, Lady Katherine Greville. But the Peninsula is a place redolent with memories. For it was here as a seventeen-year-old cornet that Hervey had his first taste of military action. The French had forced the British army into a gruelling and ignominious retreat until, under the leadership of Sir John Moore, they made a defiant stand at Corunna. In the epic battle that followed, Hervey and the Sixth Light Dragoons played their part in one of the Napoleonic War's most famous military scenes. As the wave of the French onslaught broke against the solid rock of British resolve, the tide of war was turned once and for all in England's favour. Now, with the Spanish threatening the fortress at Elvas, and as Hervey makes ready for battle once again, the sights and sounds of the Peninsula bring back a flood of memories. But it is not only Spanish aggression and ghosts from his past that Matthew must confront. Lady Katherine has arrived in the Peninsula, and with very determined intentions.... v angličtine, brožovaná, 555 strán
