The Confederates win the Civil War with aid from South African time travelers in this unconvincing "what-if" tale. Using a time machine, Andrew Rhoodie and his cadre of white supremacists from A.D. 2014 join the rebels and supply them with AK-47 assault rifles. Rhoodie's "America Will Break" brotherhood hopes to foster a haven for slavery and extreme racism that will last into succeeding centuries. Thus armed, Gen. Robert E. Lee's troops are soon victorious, and Lincoln agrees to divide the nation. Lee wins political office in the South, and, ironically, becomes both a proponent of emancipation and a foe of the bigoted visitors from the future. Turtledove ( Krispos Rising ) might win over some Civil War buffs through his knowledge of historical figures and events. But stilted dialogue, slack pacing and thin characters diminish the book's appeal.... v angličtine, obal, tvrdá väzba,560 strán

The Saddle Club - Dude Ranch

Spisovatel: Bryant Bonnie, A Bantam Books 1989
Katalogové číslo: G9862

Bryant Bonnie - The Saddle Club - Dude Ranch The sixth book in the Saddle Club series. The founders of The Saddle Club -- Stevie Lake, Carole Hanson, and Lisa Atwood -- gear up for the adventure of their lives when their friend Kate Devine invites them to her family's dude ranch. They will have a whole week of cowboy-style riding, plus the fun of making Kate a club member. But when they arrive, the girls soon realize there's more to the West than Hollywood shootout and colorful costumes. To show a cowhand that they're not just "dumb dudes," they pitch in with chores and help on a cattle roundup, where Stevie has a run-in with a dangerous rattlesnake. Another sour note for Stevie: Her birthday is coming up, and no one seems to care. Little does she know that her Saddle Club buddies have a top-secret surprise in the works for her!... v angličtine, brožovaná, 135 strán, v dolnej časti strán žlté fľaky /zľava/

The Galileans

Spisovatel: Slaughter Frank G., A Panther Book 1960
Katalogové číslo: G5587

Slaughter Frank G. - The Galileans Frank Slaughter crafted this rather touching novelization of the life of Mary Magdalene in 1953. In his interpretation, the famous Biblical character is an independent female with powerful charms as a dancer and a beautiful mane of fiery red hair (depicted on the original dustjacket -- this idea of red hair for Mary Magdalene was also very popular with Italian Renaissance artists). He does not subscribe to the notion that Mary Magdalene was also the Mary of Bethany mentioned in the Bible (Scripture doesn't say they were the same person), and he does not paint her as a wily prostitute. Instead, his Mary Magdalene is a smart female who falls in love with the young, accomplished physician Joseph, nephew of the famed Joseph of Arimathea (who is mentioned in Scripture as the one who asked for Jesus' crucified body). While Joseph patiently waits for an opportunity to commit to her, Mary is caught up in circumstances beyond her control, drawn into Pontius Pilate's court and abused there. The idea of females -- particularly beautiful ones -- being seen only as sexual objects, and the resulting feelings of shame and lowliness, are huge themes here. And this male author takes quite a bit of care in illustrating them. When Jesus comes along in this story, he's only secondary, even though he's critical to Mary's "salvation." His words are taken directly from the Revised Standard Version of the New Testament. Slaughter dives into the politics of the time, the relations of Jews and Greeks and Romans, to set the proper scene for the Galileans he focuses on. But the things Mary falls victim to have nothing to do with politics or the dreadful way females were viewed in those times; these are universal themes that are alive and thriving today.... malý formát,v angličtine,brožovaná,285 strán
